The Truth about Karate for Kids - Part 2 by Paul M. Jerard Jr.

This section covers two extremely valuable life skills that many adults pay a “king’s ransom” to attain. Adults pay a life coach, business coach, or read plenty of self-improvement books, to gain this knowledge and develop these life skills. However, within a Karate class, children can be molded toward a lifetime of achievement.

Success

There are many types of success such as: The power of
influence, mental, physical, spiritual, and material
success. A child can get a strong grasp of most of these types of successes, within the structure of his or her Karate class. Each form of success is valuable in today’s world.

The power of influence is learned through social skills, and children have to work together in order to learn Karate. Children work in pairs, or groups, to accomplish a single goal. Sometimes, the highest ranking child will lead a group, while the Karate teacher (sensei) observes or corrects at certain points.

However, the influential Karate student can be observed voluntarily helping others. This is one of many positive qualities that children learn, which are valuable in their Karate training, and it applies to having influence in life.

Mental success can be academic or something as simple as learning a new martial arts technique. The child who learns to apply his or her success, gained in a martial arts class, toward life outside Karate training, has learned one of the biggest lessons a Karate teacher can give.

Spiritual success is really left up to the parents, but many advanced Karate students learn to meditate. Meditation offers the ability to clear your mind and concentrate on one single concept, object, or idea. At the very least, kids Karate students will learn to be quiet and know how to quiet their minds. This is a relief for parents who desperately need some quiet time in the evening.

Material success arrives when all of the other forms of success work in harmony. A child who has the tools for success, learned within the Karate classroom, will be able to apply them toward school, college, and business. For most of us, success, in life, will not be attained without working at it.

Leadership

As a child attains a higher rank within his or her Karate class, the ability to lead a small group of Karate students is learned. To enhance this quality, we developed a “leadership team.” These children, on the leadership team, have displayed leadership and compassion toward their fellow Karate students.

However, every child within our North Providence kids
Karate program is taught the value of leadership as it
applies to life. There is a time to lead and a time to
follow, but children have to learn to think for themselves for their own safety and success. The power of peer pressure is a heavy burden on the minds of children.

Proper conduct is not always popular with children, but the child with strong leadership skills will not follow the negative path of influence. Children have serious daily concerns about peer pressure, drugs, and bullies. Karate training, and the leadership skills that result from it, will carry your child in the right direction.

The Truth about Karate for Kids - Part 1 by Paul M. Jerard Jr.

Do you want to give your child everything in life you never had? Of course you do; you want to give your child all of the opportunities that you didn’t have. That’s what every responsible parent wants for his or her children. However, it’s hard to keep up with all the new and expensive toys available today.

Can you imagine giving your child a gift that has twelve valuable life skills and one more benefit - on top of those twelve skills? As you already know, it’s not the latest ipod or Xbox, but your child will be very successful in life, as a result. You may have heard all this talk about life skills before, but the explanations were vague, so let’s make the explanations and results clear.

Life Skills are the self-improvement skills that we, as adults, need in order to be more successful in life; but children and adults can acquire them in a Karate class. Adults usually visit the self-improvement section of a library, bookstore, or shop on the Internet, to reprogram their minds for success. Sometimes, adults stay with a self-improvement program, and many times - they don’t.

For children in their formative years, Karate classes have a very positive impact, and shape their lives toward a path of continuous achievement. Children will stay with a self-improvement program, such as Karate, as long as they get transportation.

Positive Thinking

Within a typical Karate class, children learn to think
about the next hurdle in life. The only hurdle to focus on is the lesson plan that their Karate instructor presents for the day. This could be as simple as learning, or reviewing, a few Karate techniques. Once this has been accomplished, any child can walk away from his or her Karate class with a very positive feeling of gratification.

It is this repetition of focusing, learning, solving, and accomplishing that contributes to the positive mind-set in all Karate practitioners of all ages. When a parent reinforces these same habits at home, the young Karate student learns that staying positive, in the face of adversity, will yield many benefits and solutions in life.

Stress Management

Children are no different than adults, and they are
subjected to more everyday stress than we were as children. This is why the Karate studio is a haven for children and a place to leave stress behind and focus on simple tasks. For children, Karate class is quality time spent living in the moment, enjoying life right now, without worrying about the past or future.

Karate classes give kids a chance to jump, kick, punch, and shout at the appropriate times. Many times, I mention to the children at our facility, in North Providence, that they should take advantage of the times when they can shout. Within the structure of a kids Karate class, there is a time to speak up, and a time to listen, in order to get the most out of each Karate lesson.

Through steady Karate practice, children learn to put
stress aside and focus on getting the most out of life. They also learn that when stress comes their way, it’s time to work on solutions rather than become depressed about them. Young karate students accept stress for what it is, and rise to the opportunity to become successful in life.

After Tragedy - The Renaissance of New York by

Prior to September 11, 2001, the 16-acre World Trade Center site was one of New York City’s most familiar landmarks. Following the tragedy, workers spent months clearing the debris and remains of those who died in the attacks. On May 30, 2002, the last remaining piece of structural steel, which had come from the South Tower, was ceremoniously draped with the U.S. flag and carried out. This piece of steel has been recycled as the bow of the new assault ship, USS New York. In addition, Honeybee Robotics incorporated steel debris from the site into cable shields built for the Mars Exploration Rover mission.

The main developer of the new World Trade Center site, Larry Silverstein, heads the group of visionary leaders committed to the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site. Plans include six acres of space, five new skyscrapers, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, a retail complex, and a performing arts center. When completed they believe it will create a more vibrant future for downtown New York with superior commercialized space, a more convenient transportation system, and a highly commemorative destination for people who live, work, and visit the area.

By 2012, completion of the five World Trade Center office towers will mark a major milestone in the project. Together, with the recently opened 7 World Trade Center to the north of the site and the rising Goldman Sachs global headquarters to the west in Battery City Park, the downtown skyline will feature no fewer than seven new corporate towers comprising 14 million square feet of office space. An architectural landmark for New York City, 1 World Trade Center, the Freedom Tower, will soar 1,776 feet, symbolic of the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Freedom Tower will become the tallest building in the United States and include office space, an observation deck, world-class restaurants, and more. The tower is scheduled to open in 2011.

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum will serve as a moving and important memorial to the 2,979 people who perished in the 9/11 attacks. It will also serve as a poignant learning experience for student group travelers. The memorial’s design, Reflecting Absence, will consist of two voids on the footprints of the original Twin Towers. Surrounded by a landscaped plaza filled with oak trees, each void will feature rings of cascading water falling into illuminated reflecting pools. The names of the victims in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, as well as the February 1993 WTC bombing, will be inscribed around the memorial waterfalls.

A state-of-the-art museum will offer student group travelers the opportunity to enhance their experience. Visits will begin at an entry pavilion, as students encounter both the enormity of the loss and the triumph of the human spirit that are at the heart of 9/11. Students will also be able to view a section of the massive slurry wall that held back the Hudson River during the attacks. Construction on the memorial and museum began in March 2006. The memorial is scheduled to open Sept. 11, 2009, with the museum opening to follow in 2010. To date, the September 11 Memorial and Museum has raised more than $300 million of its $350 million goal.

In addition to the Memorial Museum, the cultural component of the new World Trade Center will include a 1,000-seat performing arts center at the northwest corner of Fulton and Greenwich Streets. The modern-dance focused Joyce Theater will be the sole occupant of the center. Although the theater will have the performing arts focus, the building may occasionally used for non-dance events, such as the Tribeca Film Festival, which takes place each spring. Construction for the project will not begin until 2010 or 2011.

The retail area, occupying 500,000 square feet, will be interspersed throughout the site, stretching from as far as the new Fulton Street Transit Center to the World Financial Center. Developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, with support from Silverstein Properties, the retail space is expected to be completed by 2012. When completed, the site will be one of the largest business districts in the United States.

More than 5.6 million visitors traveled to Lower Manhattan in 2006. They came to visit the World Trade Center site and to reflect on the tragic events of September 11, 2001. According to the Downtown Alliance, the downtown business improvement district, that’s only half of those expected to head downtown once the National September 11 Memorial and Museum opens in 2010.

Choosing A Classic For The Weekend by Shaun Parker

I had always been a car nut, as a kid my bedroom walls had been plastered with the models of the day but mostly with pictures of beautiful little open topped sports cars racing through the British countryside.

Now in adulthood I thought my chances of re-enacting these scenes were slim to none. However for a birthday gift one year my wife had contacted a classic car hire firm and not knowing which model to get had simply bought me a voucher for a weekend in whatever particular hire car I would like.

This idea was brilliant; to hire a classic car for the weekend would be fantastic and twinned with a couple of nights in a hotel would make for a very enjoyable trip. I went to the hire company’s website and laid my eyes on possibly four of the greatest cars ever made; this was going to be a difficult choice.

Firstly they had a gorgeous little Austin Healey 3000 available for hire. As a 1965 model in British racing green it had been the car I had envisaged myself driving all those years ago. After seeing this car in various races throughout the sixties, being able to hire one of these glorious little motors would be a privilege, and one that would surely be memorable for the rest of my days.

Before I capitulated to signing up for the hire of this car I made a concerted effort too look at the other classics available for hire. If I had thought that the first option had bowled me over the second car I viewed gave me even more of a shock; a beautiful example of the fabled Jaguar E-Type, soft top of course.

This revolutionary car had transformed the sports car market, its engine, the handling, but above all its styling had placed this magnificent car well ahead of its time. So much so that even Enzo Ferrari, the creator of the Ferrari motor company had called it ‘the most beautiful car ever made’.

The car today still does not look dated next to contemporary Ferraris and Porches, in many ways it is superior. Being able to hire one of these outstanding cars would be a delight I would have never expected to have.

They also had available a Mercedes Benz 280 SL, this cute little car can still be seen as cool today, with classic styling that will never be surpassed. The fact the performance and handling were clearly from a different generation was not important, it is not about going fast in a classic open top, it is about enjoying your surrounding and the company, anyway going faster than fifty in a convertible just ruins your hair.

Finally there was the veteran of the pack, the Triumph TR3A, being made up until 1962 it also had looks to die for, and its performance is also acceptable in the modern world. Being the first car with disc brakes as standard at least you know it will be safe and with a 0-60 of twelve seconds its acceleration is not all that bad. But as I said earlier, it is not all about performance.

These cars were from a different era, despite that they still have jaw dropping good looks and the ability to turn heads. The choice of which one to hire for my weekend away was a hard one, the Austin and Mercedes both had appeal, as did the little Triumph but there was no question really. Who could turn down the chance to hire a classic E-Type for the weekend?

To drive around what has been hailed as the best looking classic car of all time, the most iconic car of my generation was too good a chance to pass up. I would hire the Jaguar and tour the English countryside in style, my only worry now was the weather.

When we first had the development of the telegraph and then the telephone, we had just started to emerge into the world of communication with other means besides verbal talking and letter writing. At that time in history, people probably never dreamed that within a hundred years the entire world would be connected in so many ways and their groundbreaking technology was the beginning of it all.

The telegraph sent messages along wires that were strung from one place to another place. When a message was sent to a receiving station on the other end, it would still have to be delivered to a particular individual by a messenger or additional letter. It still was not an instantaneous process.

With the development of the telephone, much progress was made and it did in fact change the world. No longer did a decipherer have to decode a series of taps to determine the message. People could actually converse with one another over the lines. When phone lines crossed the oceans it advanced world communication to a level that had never before been possible or even dreamed of.

We take all of our communication methods for granted today, where as the primitive advances that were made a hundred years ago were miraculous to people living then. It is nothing today for us to be able to make phone calls almost anywhere we are thanks to satellites that do not have to be connected with wires to work. Satellites are one of the most beneficial inventions of all time. We use them not only to communicate by telephone, but through the internet and to provide us with advances in one of our other most incredible inventions, the television.

The television we get to watch through satellite allows us to know what is going on in the rest of the world at a moments notice and actually be able to see events as they unfold. Our recent ancestors were only to see pictures that were taken and then sent to various news papers when world events took place.

With the invention of the web cams that we now use on our personal computers, we can see a loved one on the other side of the world. We are so very privileged to be the inventers of such technologies as these. It will be even more wonderful to live long enough to see what more amazing things that might come along next.
