The Early History of Football in the UK

The Early History of Football in the UK by Simone De Munster

Football is one of those games that seems to have been around forever. Of course it hasn’t but it was first referred to in writing in 1170, which to us is a long long time ago! It was William Fitzstephen who recorded an observation of football being played by young people in the fields of London after dinner time. The game was played with a ball which was made from an inflated animal bladder. Two teams, made up of large numbers of young men, attempted to get the ball into the opposition goal. In the towns football was mainly played by craft apprentices which each trade having their own team. These games would be watched by the elders of the community, and in doing so stirred up in the elders ‘the joys of unrestrained youth’. So things haven’t changed much in the past 800 years!

Other records of the game are not so gracious and many were wholly opposed to it, including the constabulary who came after William de Spalding in the 1320s due to an opponent running towards him during the game and wounding himself on William’s sheath knife, killing him. This young man was apparently not the only footballer to have a fatality due to a knife during this period.

Edward II was also against football due to the time his archers spent honing their ball skills as opposed to their arrow proficiencies, which was almost sacrilegious at the time due to Edward’s attempts to make Englishmen the best longbowmen in the world. His solution was to ban the game, and Henry IV reinforced the ban in 1388, but to no avail – men still played, so the new solution in 1410 was to impose a fine and six days imprisonment on those caught playing football. Henry’s son Henry V, issued a proclamation which ordered men to practice archery rather than football, and Henry VIII introduced laws which prohibited the playing of the game in public. This banning went on for many years with the church getting in on the act, as they disagreed with the game being played on a Sunday.

No matter how much any one person, authority or institution objected against the game, the banning was not accepted by the masses, even though local councils also banned the game, with football officers being appointed to patrol and police the bye-laws. It wasn’t until after Cromwell’s death in 1660 that the game properly re-emerged as Cromwell had been particularly successful in bringing the game to a halt.

Things then came full circle, and by the 18th century football was played by most of Britain’s public schools, including Eton where it is known to have been played as early as 1747. In this era the goal posts could be several miles apart – for example there was one game, played every Shrove Tuesday in Derbyshire, which involved two huge teams made up anyone who lived in the town and the action took place between goals three miles apart.

To get your hands on some retro football shirts, although its doubtful you’ll be able to get any from 1170 visit England Retro Football Shirts online which has a massive collection of retro football shirts from the EPL, La Liga and International teams like England, Brazil and Scotland.

If you are interested in golf but are prone to frequent swing fault then you can have a look at the various tips that can come very handy.

Golf swing tips can be the way to your success in the game. There are many ways to score lower, one being to gain an increased distance from the tee. If you are placed at a shorter distance from the green the chances of you scoring on par are much higher. In the game of golf both accuracy and the distance constitutes a major factor. If you do not manage this well then you may be in trouble. There are many easy steps by which you can drive long off the tee.

Use the right tee height:

You can tee the ball to a higher level and position it in such a way so that the ball an be hit on the upswing position. The ball should not be hit with lot of power, instead there should be a good consistent rhythm and constantly increase the swing speed. It is better to use the right shaft flex to control the swing speed and a flexible shaft can be helpful to get a lower swing speed. Wrists can be cocked early on the backswing and can be un cocked during the downswing which can make the movement very swift. You can turn your shoulders to a complete 90 degrees to get the maximum distance.

Mastering the art of golf irons is very important but it is a too often neglected. There are plenty of ways by which you can learn how to get the control on your golf irons. You can practice on the range which will help you know the average distance of each golf iron in your kit. If you want to hit a particular distance then you have to use the right iron and go for the full swing.

Before deciding on the golf iron, take into consideration the wind strength along with the distance and height. The ball position and the stance have to be adjusted depending on the surface you play. Playing in the rough surface is different from playing from the fair position. So you need to have the right judgement.Proper course management would be very helpful, like it may not be a good decision to go for the pin always.

The short game of golf is very important where there is a necessity of having good practice. For short game which is below 50 yards you can always use a bump and run that can help keep the ball rolling at the earliest. A slightly open stance and placing your feet closer to each other can be very helpful in the short game of golf. Most of the time the length of the backswing will determine the distance your ball is going to travel.

Green Cruising: A Matter of Environment and Sense

Green Cruising: A Matter of Environment and Sense by Alex Gwen Thomson

In recent years, the cruise industry has experienced tremendous growth. According to the Cruise Line International Association, in the United States alone, the cruise industry employed over 350,000 workers and generated over $38 billion in revenues in 2008. Accompanying this development has been the increased criticism from environmental groups about the effects that these floating casinos, restaurants, hotels and fitness clubs have on the environment.

In fact, a new term has been added to the lexicon (DELETE: of the travel industry). “Green cruising” or “eco cruising.” It denotes a method of cruising that seeks to be more environmentally friendly.

The explosion in the number of individuals, couples and families electing to go on cruises over other week-end and vacation options is a testament to the convenience and the pleasures derived from this mode of travel, which focuses on pampering its clients. You unpack once; you don’t have to book a hotel and there is little concern about where to eat. Best of all, you get to visit exotic ports; see far-away places; and sample different lifestyles and cultures in a very hassle-free manner.

Now, just take a moment to stop and think about all of the different facilities and amenities that the typical passenger cruise ship offers. The massive size and volume of the services, goods and products required to support the operations of a cruise ship are truly astounding.

On an average day, a 3,000-passenger cruise ship discards seven tons of paper, foam, cans, bottles, batteries and food waste in refuge bins every day. Chemical waste is also generated from photo lab mixtures and dry cleaning solutions and other processes. Gray water, coming from showers, cleaning, laundry and swimming pools measures out to 255,000 gallons a day. Grey water is contaminated with oil, solvents, pesticides and chlorine. The raw sewage or “brown/black water, on average, is about 30,000 gallons on a daily basis.

As more consumers choose green cruising, or bypass this type of travel altogether, cruise lines have undertaken more aggressive green initiatives to protect their share of the travel market. This is good news for the many ecologically aware travelers who can continue to enjoy their favorite style of taking a trip. Most cruise lines design their own eco-cruising policies. Typically, the components address the environmental areas of recycling incinerating and processing waste.

For example, some cruise lines have installed fully enclosed water systems on their ships. The process consists of three separate water systems: fresh water, gray water and black water. Usually the fresh water, which is used for showers and faucets, is treated.

It is then used in the gray water system for cleaning decks and washing laundry. The last step consists of toilet water and used gray water is collected in the black water system. Eco-cruising ships have a state-of-the-art water treatment process that removes bacteria and solids. The system is non-toxic to humans as well as the environment.

It is eventually taken away at shore or released, at least, 12 miles out in the ocean. Some other changes include one cruise line donating its cooking grease to an organic Power (AMP) system, which allows them to “plug to shore.” This system is said to reduce sulfur emissions by 50 percent for each day spent in port.

A few years ago, Holland America introduced a system that uses seawater to clean the emissions from the smokestacks. They also develop a method that uses an energy-efficient combination of diesel-electric and gas turbine hybrid system to power its newest fleet. Carnival has also engineered a propulsion process, called “enviro-engine,” that gets rid of the black visible smoke emission that are common in the industry. Celebrity and Royal Caribbean have also employed the latest alternative gas turbine technology to power their new ships.

Cruise lines have been more diligent in the development of green cruising solutions. Their reputations had taken some hits over the years. The innovations and solutions are in direct response to meeting the demands of the eco cruising slice of the travel sector. For the consumer, green cruising is not something that has to cost more. It’s only a matter of doing a little bit of research and seeking out eco-friendly cruise lines. You can do your part to help out the environment and still enjoy having the sunshine on your face as take on that cool ocean breeze.

Niagara Falls Attractions: Nature in all its Glory

Niagara Falls Attractions: Nature in all its Glory by Mark Patterson

Niagara Falls is one of the most stunning natural wonders on the face of the Earth, and also an incredibly celebrated tourist attraction. The falls are in fact far from being the highest falls on the planet. They measure in at fifty four meters high (177 feet), and can be contrasted with Angel Falls of Venezuela, the tallest falls in the world which measure in at 979 meters (3212 ft) high. Niagara Falls are however, a massively exciting sight to behold, due to the wide vista of the falls, and the awesome volume of water passing over them. The awe-struck state that is inspired by the falls lends itself perfectly to a romantic atmosphere, which is why Niagara Falls is a common honeymoon spot. In fact, it is sometimes spoken of as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World”.

The water that rushes over the falls drops down into the Niagara Gorge, a depression in the earth that was created roughly 1200 years ago. This occurred at the time that the five Great Lakes were formed by melting glaciers. One of the lakes known as Lake Erie ran downhill towards another lake called Lake Ontario, and formed the Niagara River. The river moved through the Niagara escarpment, a geological transition zone of varying elevations, and this caused the water to massively back up at the entrance to the escarpment. This backup of water formed the Niagara Gorge. The gorge is today still being eroded at a speed of thirty centimeters (or 12 inches) per year.

The Canada-United States border runs through the area of Niagra Falls. The more extraordinary side of the falls is typically thought to be the Canadian side, which is known as the “Horsehoe”. A border crossing exists at Niagara Falls, and crossing isn’t difficult, assuming that you have taken care of all necessary visa concerns. The name of the Horseshoe is taken from its U-shaped formation. You have probably seen this section of the falls on television or on postcards, since it is the part where the heaviest quantity of water flows, with roughly nine times the volume of the falls on the American side. 168,000 cubic meters (or 6 million cubic feet) of water passes over the lip of the falls each minute, and moves at a speed of 56.3 kilometers per hour (or 35 mph). It is an extremely powerful phenomenon to witness this massive flow up close.

You can get a fantastic postcard view of the falls from a selection of different observation spots in the area. A boatride on the Maid of the Mist vessel, which ferries you all the way up to the base of the falls, is the most prevalent way to get a closer view of the falls. Believe it or not you can also observe the falls from behind at “Journey Behind the Falls”. For those rich folks with a little extra cash to burn, Niagara helicopter tours are an exciting option. At night the falls are illuminated, so you can see beautiful views even after dark.

Of course the falls are the main attraction of Niagara Falls, but you can also enjoy other activities like gambling casinos, indoor water parks, world-class golf courses, spas, and plenty more.
